Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Upgrades to items allow players to enhance their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, increasing its stats base or adding additional perks. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.
Usually, items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, whereas objects with strong bases, such as eth titans do not vary in their stats following being upgraded.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons, trinkets, and gathering tools. They can be used as an attribute benefit, or additional effect, when the equipment is being used. They can be purchased from vendors, or found in loot, dropped by enemies or received as a reward for missions or chests. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require the equipment to be at a certain level before they are upgraded.
To upgrade the quality of a weapon, armor or other item in the game, players must select it and then click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. The preview will appear on the right side of the screen that shows what the expected upgrade statistics will be, as well as the component or material needed to complete the upgrade.
There are three kinds: universal upgrades (which include gems) prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, like gems, can be put on any type of equipment.
